Applies to businesses whose country is **Canada**.

## What is set up for you

- Currency **CAD** ($), tax name **GST/HST**, **tax-exclusive** pricing.
- At signup OneBooks asks for your **province** or territory and sets the default rate to the combined rate charged there: HST where a province has harmonised, GST plus the provincial tax elsewhere, GST alone in Alberta and the territories.
- Your GST/HST registration number goes in **Settings → Business Profile → Tax ID**.

## Rates by province

| Province or territory | Taxes | Default rate |
|---|---|---|
| Alberta | GST | 5% |
| British Columbia | GST + PST | 12% |
| Manitoba | GST + RST | 12% |
| New Brunswick | HST | 15% |
| Newfoundland and Labrador | HST | 15% |
| Nova Scotia | HST | 14% |
| Northwest Territories | GST | 5% |
| Nunavut | GST | 5% |
| Ontario | HST | 13% |
| Prince Edward Island | HST | 15% |
| Quebec | GST + QST | 14.975% |
| Saskatchewan | GST + PST | 11% |
| Yukon | GST | 5% |

Nova Scotia's HST fell to 14% on 1 April 2025. When a rate changes, edit it under **Settings → Tax Settings**; existing documents keep the rate they were issued with.

## Rates to add

OneBooks seeds **GST 5%**, the **HST** rates (13%, 14%, 15%), the **GST + PST** combinations, **GST + QST 14.975%**, **Zero Rated** and **Exempt**, so a line can carry the right rate when you sell into another province or supply zero-rated goods such as basic groceries. Pick the rate per line on the invoice; the default is the one your province sets.

## Reverse charge

Use **Reverse charge** on imported services where you self-assess GST/HST. The tax appears on both sides of the tax report, so your net position is unchanged while the return still shows it.

## GST/HST return

**Reports → Tax Report** gives the tax collected, the input tax credits and the net amount for the period — the figures you transfer to your GST/HST return, and to the QST return in Quebec. See [Tax report and tax summary](https://docs.getonebooks.com/reports/tax-reports/).
